On May 9, Bishop Benedict ordained Nicholas Mataya of San Antonio, Texas, to the diaconate at St. Andrew the First-Called Mission in Austin, Texas, located on the grounds of St. Michael’s Catholic Academy.

Concelebrating the Divine Liturgy were the pastor of the mission, Fr. Petro Maletsky, Fr. Kostiantyn Popov, pastor of St. Sophia’s Parish in The Colony, Texas, and Fr. John Mefrige, pastor of Three Hierarchs Melkite Church in San Antonio.

The joyous celebration gathered faithful from across the state of Texas, including an Honor Guard from the local Knights of Columbus Assembly, who participated in the liturgical celebration and honored the newly ordained deacon.

In his homily, Bishop Benedict reflected on God’s plan and the unique calling that the Lord places in each person’s life. He reminded the faithful that although we may not always understand where God leads us, His plan is always beautiful and guided by divine wisdom. The Bishop encouraged all present to remain open to God’s voice and to trust in His providence.

The ordination of Deacon Nicholas Mataya marks an important moment not only in his personal vocation, but also in the life of the local Church community, which gathered in prayer and thanksgiving for this joyful occasion.
